At the regularly scheduled Springdale City Council meeting on May 9, the Council voted to rename the portion of S. 56th Street from Don Tyson Parkway to Bleaux Ave. Gene George Boulevard. The change will go into effect immediately upon the signing of the ordinance by Mayor Doug Sprouse, City Clerk Denise Pearce, and City Attorney Ernest Cate.
A public hearing about the name change was held at this month’s Planning Commission meeting on May 2, and the Commissioners voted 8-0 to forward this item to the City Council with the recommendation for approval.
"[Gene George] was a tremendous supporter of this city, and many of the things we see in this city would not have been possible without the generosity of the George family," said Mayor Sprouse at the May Planning Commission meeting. "The George family has probably given well over $1 million worth of right-of-way for road projects in this city to help our citizens. It’s no secret that the improvements to 56th St. that were made with our 2012 bond issue probably could not have happened without the donation of right-of-way by the George family."
S. 56th St. south of Don Tyson Parkway and N. 56th St. north of Elm Springs Road will not be renamed at this time. Please see the attached map for reference.
